The Area Around the Ebbetts Pass Fire DistrictThe area in and around the Ebbetts Pass Fire District is within the Stanislaus National Forest and private lands in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains and Foothills. The elevation of the District ranges from 2200 to 7000 feet. There are numerous rivers, streams, and lakes for summer enjoyment. The District has one ski/play hill area within its boundaries at Cottage Springs and another, the larger Bear Valley Ski area, is in neighboring Alpine County, just 40 minutes away from Arnold.

Looking up to the top of a Giant Sequoia Redwood tree can be an exhilarating experience at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park - just 4 miles east of Arnold on State Route Highway 4. The "High Country" and surrounding areas offer summer wilderness opportunities - Backpacking, fishing, mountain biking, canoeing/kayaking, are but a few. The surrounding areas in the lower elevations offer other activity opportunities - Exploring old historic sites and mining towns, fishing or rafting on the Stanislaus River and boating on Lake New Melones.
